This controversial debate has been going on in rounds for a long time. This debate doesn’t have a conclusion and is likely not to have one in the near future as well. Technology has come a long way to make our life easier, definitely no question about it, but it’s also impossible not to realize the cost at which it has influenced our lives, especially, in the case of children and teens.
Nowadays, it has become quite rare to see children without a digital device in hand wherever we go: restaurants, malls, movies, and more. There was a time when parents used to keep digital devices hidden lest their children might find them. Now, we see the same parents giving the digital device to children during feeding them or when they don’t want to be disturbed. Are we not being biased, giving mixed signals to children in this way, that, it’s okay to use your device when I’m engaged and it’s not okay to use the device whenever you want? This leaves us with a million-dollar question: Are we doing right by our kids, when it comes to exposing the technology to children?
The rapid pace at which toddlers, children, and teens are adopting technology into their everyday lives is really astonishing! With this pandemic, digital classrooms were the only choice for continued learning, and new activities and interactive fun-filled problem-solving games have also helped children in enhancing their problem-solving skills which might assist them in overcoming their obstacles in the future.
Even though there are many negative effects of children’s interaction with technology like Lower attention span, Addiction to gadgets, Health problems, Sleep quality reduction, Cyberbullying, and many more, it’s a strongly shared opinion that Technology is recommended for children if they keep themselves in check while using it daily. Otherwise, it can be harmful! The positive effects of kids’ interaction with technology can’t be ignored, however, necessary safety measures to benefit from the positive effects of technology without being impacted much by the negative effects can be taken like Setting up an age limit for Social Networks, Keeping a close eye on the type of content being watched by our kids, Reducing the interaction with online communication apps, Educating the child on the difference between imagination and truth, and more importantly being there for the child no matter what, making the child trust you totally that they confide in you in case of any issue! Kids’ interaction with Technology is surely a boon, given how parents help them with it!
Mental health is dealing with our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
